The Birth of Mexico

Angel Tarrac, sketch for The Birth of Mexico (C), 12 1/2 x 5 inches, pencil, 1963.

The artist's purpose was to represent the birth of Mexico as a child emerging from a corn stalk, surrounded by the mayan symbols of the elements: fire, wind, water, and earth. The result was a 70 feet long raised work in stone for the PRI building in Mexico City, for which the artist was awarded the first prize in a national art contest.
